KUMAON MEANING


Kumaon is believed to have been derived from Sanskrit word "Kurmanchal", meaning land of the Kurmavatar, i.e the tortoise incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The term "Kumaon" is derived from the ancient Katyuri dynasty, which ruled the area in the medieval period.


In local dialects of Kumaoni language, the word "Kumaon" is pronounced as "Kumaun." The people of Kumaon are referred to as "Kumaonis". Kumaon holds significant cultural and historical importance in Uttarakhand, with a rich heritage of traditions, arts, folklore, and customs.
